Why Material Is Amended

The Building Code of Australia (BCA) is amended every year, Australian Standards, Manufacturer Directions and the like change over time, errors in existing material can be discovered, and new issues continually emerge.

Building Professionals must familiarise themselves with relevant Codes and Directions and currently published ABLE material to ensure the material they are using is currently applicable.

Once published, Local Practice Resources are only amended if:

Subsequent BCA amendments do not affect the material, or
Local Practice Project support and resources are in place to undertake the required research, obtain expert evidence and/or update the material content, or
Editorial changes/improvements are made that do not affect the technical content.

How To Suggest An Amendment or Improvement

In a community of practice people learn how to work smarter by exchanging their working experiences with others.

Whether you’re a designer or draftsperson, estimator or scheduler, contract administrator, construction manager, supervisor, tradesperson, supplier or contractor you are a Building Professional who belongs to the industry community and are part of a community of individuals that do what you do.

How You Know Material Has Been Updated

Local Practice Resources have a “currency” tag that is typically shown at the top of the page. This tag has three parts:

Published (Date) – this identifies the when the material was first published.
Amendment (No.) – this identifies changes that have been made to published material. These changes can range from editorial corrections through to technical content changes required to update the material for subsequent BCA versions.
BCA (Year) – this identifies the BCA version that applies for the material. If the year does not match the current BCA version, then the material has not been updated and cannot be used to verify compliance.

“Currency” tags should be interpreted as follows:

Published: 4 January 2008

The material was published on 4 January 2008 and has not been amended, and the material does not describe BCA compliance.

Published: 16 September 2010 / Amendment No. 4

The material was published on 16 September 2010, has been amended four times, and the material does not describe BCA compliance.

Published: 5 June 2010 / BCA 2010

The material was published on 5 June 2008, has not been amended, and is current for use with BCA 2010.

Published: 9 October 2008 / Amendment No. 2 / BCA 2011

The material was published on 9 October 2008, has been amended two times, and the material is current for use with BCA 2011.
