Design & Drafting Work Practice Document Template
Current at: 27 May 2010 (C)
Why Develop This Document Template?
The intent of the As-Built Learning Exchange (ABLE) Common Practice protocol is to resource work practices that deliver affordability, compliance and performance gains.
This document provides a template for describing the Design & Drafting Work Practices required for design concepts and working drawings to reflect specified building work.
Where, When, and Who Can Use This Common Practice Template?
Document templates can only be used in Western Australia and only apply for the Building Code of Australia Volume 2 for Class 1 and 10 Buildings (BCA).
Building Professionals are granted Open Exchange Use rights. Users accept the Conditions of Use that apply to all ABLE material.
How Should This Document Template Be Used?
Adapt and Then Adopt – just like the “beware of the dog” sign on the gate, better technical descriptions need to be approached carefully – they too can bite if not approached properly!
Document templates are intended to be reviewed and adapted to suit business compliance and workmanship choices before being adopted.
Documenting Protocol – located at the head of the document, this records the administrative practices required for a consistent drawing format and captures the information needed to make new staff inductions quicker and more effective.
It is intended that this schedule will be reviewed and the protocols amended to reflect individual documenting practices.
BCA Design Compliance – the BCA has provisions that apply to design and construction. This section provides a summary of BCA design provisions that affect building design.
It is intended that new and/or amended descriptions will be added to the template as users who are willing to participate in the development of better common practice documents provide feedback to ABLE about other “likely to occur” supplementary notes.
Building Compliance & Workmanship – this section adopts the common information structure so that drawing descriptions can be easily cross-referenced to Specified building work descriptions and the selections nominated in the Addenda.
Rather than create individual descriptions for each drawing type, a master description schedule has been developed with an adjacent drawing list so that descriptions can be tagged to the appropriate drawing. This ensures that issues do not “fall through the gaps”, creates a more coherent checklist and reduces the likelihood of descriptions being repeated across several drawings.
It is intended that new and/or amended descriptions will be added to the template as users who are willing to participate in the development of better common practice documents provide feedback to ABLE about other “likely to occur” building element notes.
