6-Star - DTS or Modelling? - Outcomes in Brief

OUTCOMES IN BRIEF: BCA CLIMATE ZONE 5

There are two options for verifying BCA 2010 Volume 2 Part 3.12 Energy Efficiency compliance (see 3.12.1 – Application of Part 3.12). For this project the two assessment methods have been abbreviated to DTS and Modelling.

DTS is the current local practice assessment method. Modelling is the new Acceptable Construction Practice (ACP) option. It uses House Energy Rating Software (AccuRate, BERS, FirstRate) to verify building thermal performance achieves a 6-Star rating and it also requires compliance with nominated ACP provisions.

For reporting purposes, the heading DTS Assessment Outcomes describes BCA 2010 DTS compliance and the notes under the heading Modelling Assessment Outcomes provide an indicative comparative outcome (software assessment of thermal performance is not tied to the DTS assessment steps).

This Local Practice Project was undertaken to discover:

1.  How BCA 2009 5-Star DTS assessment outcomes compare with BCA 2010 6-Star DTS and Modelling assessment outcomes?

2.  Issues that builders and designers will need to consider when choosing the BCA 2010 6-Star assessment option best suited to their needs.
